Hospitality @ Brixton – video

As you may recall, we recently shot Hospital Records’ birthday bash at O2 Academy in Brixton. The video is now available on general release and reflects what an astonishingly loud and brilliant night it was.

Shot on a combination of EOS 550d and 60d cameras it’s another example of the incredible low-light capabilities of these work-horses.

Cinevate’s Sliders and Dollies – A Music Video BTS

Quote from Cinevate:

We recently had the pleasure of working with Bill Frakes and Laura Heald, Imaginarium and Anya Marina during the music video production of Anya Marina’s Felony Flats.

It was a great opportunity for us to showcase a variety of applications for just about every camera slider and dolly that Cinevate makes.

Cinevate would like to thank…

Redrock Micro Launches Universal Bundles for DSLR cameras

New Concept in Support Rigs: One Bundle, Multiple Rigs

Hollywood, CA – Redrock Micro, the recognized leader in affordable professional-quality cinema accessories, today announced the new Universal Bundles for video DSLR cameras such as the Canon 5D and 7D. Universal Bundles are a new concept for delivering DSLR support that enables customers to make one purchase and enjoy multiple rig configurations. The Redrock Universal Bundles address customers’ need for more flexibility when purchasing DSLR support equipment, and that the realities of production often require more than one camera support setup.

“Redrock Micro’s Universal Bundles address two key requests from our customers,” said James Hurd, Chief Revolutionary of Redrock Micro. “First, customers want added flexibility in case aren’t 100% sure of the “right rig” for them at the time they purchase, and second they want flexibility to create new rigs as their production demands change. By delivering multiple rigs in a single bundle at an attractive price, Redrock Universal Bundles deliver.”

Redrock is shipping seven universal bundles: one for each of the popular product lines – nano, handheld, shouldermount, and studio – and two “master” bundles that build multiple rigs across product families. The Complete Universal Bundle enables customers to build every HDSLR rig Redrock currently offers. In addition to support for DSLR cameras, the Universal Bundles can be easily adapted for use with the latest video cameras such as the Panasonic AG-AF100, Canon XF300, and Sony PMW-F3. Pricing on Universal Bundle is often less than other solutions that give customers only a single rig. Like all Redrock products, the Universal Bundles carry a Lifetime Warranty.

“Our customers consistently tell us they love Redrock’s ‘mix-and-match’ approach that allows them to build any kind of rig they want,” said Chris Edwards, Cinematographer and Founder of Production Junction, a boutique New York rental house specializing in custom rigs for feature films. “Redrock’s Universal Bundles extend that idea into how customers buy, so they can purchase once and get the flexibility they want, often spending less than the price of a single higher priced rig from another company. Just as C-Stands and Sandbags are the constant companion of lighting equipment, so is Redrock for cameras…they will last an entire career. It’s the must have toolkit for cinematographers.”

Pricing and Availability
Redrock Universal Bundles are available immediately direct from Redrock Micro at redrockmicro.com/universal or through one of Redrock Micro’s worldwide authorized resellers. Pricing varies based on configuration and starts at $1,276.

Technicolor “CineStyle” released for EOS DSLRs

Canon and Technicolor have teamed up to produce “CineStyle”, a freely downloadable picture style for Canon EOS DSLR cameras.

The style uses the notion of a flat ‘digital negative’ as its basis and manages to extend the latitude of EOS cameras even closer towards what can be recorded with traditional film. Furthermore, the style is supported by an S-curve look-up table (LUT) for use with Final Cut Pro.

The image produced by the style is very thin, grey almost, which is the perfect starting point when colour correction (CC) is an integral part of your workflow.

If you’re unfamiliar with CC, or are happy to use images straight out of the camera, this is not the picture style for you but it’s a great picture style, when a digital negative is called for.

Detonate @ Stealth / Rescue Rooms, Nottingham.

Shot earlier in the year on Canon 550d and 600d, this is the final version of the promo video for the massive Detonate nights in Nottingham.
Was great fun to be amongst such a willing audience and nice to be shooting a corporate piece that didn’t involve conveyor belts or close ups of machinery in motion.

Hospitality @ Brixton O2 Academy

Last night my brother and I shot Hospital Records’ 15th anniversary party at the O2 Academy in Brixton and what a night it was!

Not only did they need a promo video covering what was the most important Drum & Bass night of the year but they wanted additional footage of the whole event for their archives. Since we were recording the archive footage, it was decided that a web stream of the event was also in order, which is where the fun began!

Having never streamed an event before, the logistics were a new playing field for us but we soldiered on barring a couple of hiccups we pulled it off. The main issue was a Firewire cable that refused to lock into the port and which therefore shuffled out of the slot at the slightest vibration, despite gaffer-taping it and the laptop to the table! Bearing in mind thus was a Drum & Bass event, with a sound system which pounded the bass deep into the bones, vibration was going to be an issue.

Further compromises were made when we discovered the limited bandwidth of the internet connection was to be shared with other users, so we had to drop the video quality right down to enable better audio (which was pulled straight out of the mixing deck into the camera’s XLR posts).

This aside, we managed to keep the stream up for about 95% of the night which was deemed a success given the circumstances but as with so many things in this business, the troubles proved to be a valuable learning experience.

Technical hiccups aside, the main filming went well and the new Canon 50mm f1.4 lens sung sweetly in the low light conditions. On focus pulls through a crowd some 4000 strong its depth separation is incredible.

Tweeted a couple of images yesterday @RollingShutter and will get the promo video posted here as soon as it’s approved for release.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need sleep!

Canon announces latest update for EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro

Launching to coincide with the start of the 2011 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas, EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro version 1.2 will make the importing of EOS Movie files even easier, allowing users to transfer files from any folder, without needing to mirror the folder structure on the camera itself. The update also enables smoother importing from Canon’s EOS 7D, EOS 5D Mark II and EOS-1D Mark IV models, allowing users to import footage without requiring the THM file generated by the camera.

Originally launched in February 2010, EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro is designed to quickly and seamlessly convert EOS Movie footage from Canon’s leading range of EOS DSLR cameras to Apple’s high-quality ProRes 422 codec. The plug-in allows users to convert footage at approximately twice the speed of Apple’s standard conversion, creating a smoother workflow for the rapidly growing number of videographers shooting HD video content on DSLR cameras.

EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro version 1.2 will be available to download for free from 25th April 2011.
